Lake Wobegon® Brass Band Member

Name:  Dick Miller
Instrument:  Flugelhorn

Dick Miller is an original member of the LWBB.  In addition to being the band's flugelhorn player, he has served as the band president and treasurer, has been the coordinator of the band's two international tours, has served on the band steering committee since its inception and has served on the band CD committee.

Dick began his musical career in the music program of the St. Paul Park Schools.   He was promoted to the prestigious high school band there while only in seventh grade.  As a ninth grade student he was selected to perform with Don Jacoby, a nationally recognized trumpet performer and recording artist.

Dick received his undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin at River Falls where he studied trumpet with Conrad DeJong and Stephen Chenette, then principal trumpet of the Minnesota Orchestra.  In the 1970s, Dick traveled to Cleveland, Ohio to study music education with nationally recognized expert Bennett Reimer at Case Western Reserve University.  While there, he also studied at the Cleveland Institute of Music with Bernard Adelstein, principal trumpet of the Cleveland Orchestra.

After receiving a Master of Arts degree from Case Western Reserve, Dick returned to Minnesota to continue his teaching career in the Mounds View Public Schools.  Even though Dick thoroughly enjoyed teaching, he realized that for him music could be enjoyed more as a hobby than as a profession.  So in 1981, Dick started his own company, Financial Planning Consultants.  Dick has worked as a Certified Financial Planner and Registered Investment Advisor for the past twenty-two years.

Dick has performed continually, for over thirty years, with the North Metropolitan Brass Quintet.  It has been a delight for him to share musical experiences with other quintet members Ric Perkins, Dave Peterson, Bill Butler, Jim Engebretson and Vicki Wheeler.

The highlight of his brass band experiences was his presentation to Elizabeth, Queen Mother of England and Charles, Prince of Wales during the band's tour of the United Kingdom in July, 2001.
