Name: John Froelich
Instrument: Bass Trombone
John Froelich is one of the original members of the LWBB and continues to anchor the trombone section in that capacity. John is an active performer and can be heard performing with the Civic Orchestra of Minneapolis, the Riverside Brass Quintet and the Basilica Brass. John has also been a member of the Minneapolis Trombone Choir and the Nocturns Big Band in St. Cloud.
He performed several seasons with the Minneapolis Concentus Musicus, in which he played the bass and tenor sackbut (renaissance trombone). For the last few years he has conducted the twenty piano Honors Concert for the Minnesota Music Teachers Association at Northrop Auditorium.
John graduated from St. Cloud State with a B.S. in music education and the University of Minnesota where he completed both an M.A. and Ph.D. His major trombone teachers were Kenton Frohrip, Henry Charles Smith and Ronald Ricketts. Dr. Froelich is an active music education researcher, with many presentations and publications to his credit. He is a past president of the Minnesota Music Educators Association and is a clinician for the Getzen Band Instrument Company.
Dr. Froelich is currently teaching elementary general music and beginning band and orchestra in the Osseo Public Schools. He will spend the month of July, 2003 in Rome (Italy) playing with the Rome Festival Orchestra. John plans to retire in the spring of 2003 so he can devote his full time to trombone playing and researching how the teaching of music can support the literacy of young children.
