Lake Wobegon® Brass Band Member

Name:  Lora Loahr
Instrument:  E-Flat Alto Horn

Lora Loahr is an original member of the LWBB.  French horn is her main instrument, but she has enjoyed the challenge of playing alto horn in this British brass band.  Recently, she discovered that her grandfather played the Alto Horn in the Excelsior City Band in the early 1900s.  Knowing that this instrument is not commonplace in America today, the coincidence has been a remarkable discovery.

Lora grew up in Columbia Heights, Minnesota and graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in music education.  She has enjoyed teaching instrumental music for 16 years.  Her first job as a band teacher was in the White Bear Lake school district.  She also taught in St. Michael's Catholic School in Prior Lake, Robbinsdale school district, and now enjoys her third year teaching in St. Francis Middle School.

Lora is an active music ministry leader for the Church of St. Paul in Ham Lake, Minnesota; leading worship through voice and piano, working with instrumentalists and composing music.  One of her more diverse experiences has been the exciting challenge of directing the St. Olaf African International Choir in worship for the "African Style Masses" in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Her experiences with this group included playing piano, singing songs in several languages, transcribing music from many countries in Africa and Cuba, coordinating dances for the entrance and offertory processions and bringing this unique worship team to other parishes in Minneapolis/St. Paul.

Her love for music is a large part of her life, but she would not be complete without her four children.  Her three sons and one daughter give her many reasons to smile and keep busy; since they all have special needs of various degrees.  They enjoy loving and training their two miniature horses together as well as raising their three rabbits and two tortoises.  Lora looks forward to many more enjoyable years with the LWBB.
